Réné Guerra: French Slavist and Collector

Réné Guerra was a French philologist, Slavist, and collector. He pursued his studies at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO) and the Sorbonne University in Paris.

Academic and Literary Contributions

Guerra's master's thesis (later a doctoral dissertation in 1981) focused on the works of the Russian prose writer Boris Zaitsev. He served as Zaitsev's literary secretary from 1967 to 1972. Guerra taught at the University of Nice, INALCO, and the Center for Languages and Foreign Military Research at the École militaire in Paris. He also worked as a simultaneous interpreter.

Guerra maintained active correspondence with prominent figures in Soviet culture, publishing a collection of these exchanges in 1992 titled "Zhal' russkiy narod: Perepiska Réné Guerra s deyatelyami sovetskoy kul'tury" (Editions Albatros, 1992).

Russian Emigration and Archival Heritage

Guerra's research interests included literature and culture of the Russian emigration in France. His extensive archive contains materials from the personal archives of Ivan Bunin, Irina Odoevtseva, Yuri Annenkov, Georgy Adamovich, and other major cultural figures of the emigration. Guerra maintained close relationships with many of them.

He founded and headed the Association for the Preservation of Russian Cultural Heritage in France.

Later Years and Honors

In his later years, Guerra became a frequent visitor to Russia and developed a close friendship with the Russian artist Lyudmila Varlamova. He was elected an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. In 2008, he was awarded the Order of Friendship.
