Tragedy Strikes: Woman Dies from Pet Rat Bite
Initial IncidentA 34-year-old British woman, Simone Stapley, tragically passed away from a rat bite on November 8, 2022. The beloved pet rat, unbeknownst to Stapley, was a carrier of a deadly infection. After ignoring a healthcare professional's advice, she neglected to seek immediate medical attention.
Delayed Response and Deterioration
Despite developing signs of infection, Stapley initially consulted with an NHS 111 operator, but disregarded their instructions to see a general practitioner. Subsequently, her condition worsened, and she was rushed to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on November 7. The following day, she succumbed to a heart attack.
Disease in Focus: Rat-Bite Fever
The Oxford Coroner's investigation revealed that Stapley's cause of death was "rat-bite fever," also known as sodoku. This infectious disease is transmitted through contact with rats that carry harmful bacteria. While rare in the UK, ignoring rat bite wounds can lead to severe complications, including fatality.
Symptoms include fever, vomiting, headaches, and muscle aches. If left untreated, it can progress to pulmonary, hepatic, and cardiac infections. Approximately 10% of those infected with rat-bite fever die from the disease.
Loved One's Testimony
According to a written statement from Stapley's partner, Ryan Blighdon, she began experiencing bouts of delirium and informed him of seeing their son on the stairs, despite his absence. Blighdon initially believed Stapley, who had a history of chest infections, had suffered a stroke and promptly called for an ambulance.
Underlying Health Conditions and Immunity
The inquest found that Stapley's immune system was compromised due to ongoing bouts of pneumonia and other illnesses prior to the rat bite. The coroner stressed the importance of recognizing the dangers posed by rat bites and seeking medical assistance immediately.
"People need to be aware of the risks of infection from rat bites or scratches and to seek medical help promptly," he stated.
Prevention and Recommendations
To prevent rat-bite fever, it is crucial to wash your hands thoroughly after handling, feeding, or cleaning up after pet rats. Moreover, the coroner emphasized that most cases of rat-bite fever can be easily treated with a short course of antibiotics.
