Early Life and Education
Sonia Maria de Farias Guimarães was born on June 18, 1957, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She studied chemistry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Artistic Beginnings
Guimarães began her artistic career in 1977 when she performed in the play "Dor de Amor" ("Pain of Love"). She gained further recognition as the host of the Rede Globo variety show Vídeo Show, a role she held for fifteen years (1986-2001).
Personal Life
Guimarães has been married three times. She was married to actor Paulo César Pereio for 15 years, with whom she had two sons, Thomas and João, an actor. After their divorce, she married saxophonist Raul Mascarenhas, with whom she had a son, Rafael (1991-2010). Her third marriage lasted 6 years to physician João Batista Figueiredo de Mello, with whom she had no children.
Recent Career
In 2010, she starred in the play "Doidas e Santas." Since August 8, 2015, she has been hosting the Saturday program "À de Casa."
Tragedy and Recovery
On July 20, 2010, Guimarães lost her son, 18-year-old Rafael Mascarenhas, who was fatally struck in a tunnel in Gávea, south of Rio de Janeiro. The tunnel was closed for maintenance, but there was an opening through which two cars entered the tunnel, one of which ended up hitting Rafael, who was skateboarding with two friends.
