Sokrat Galustyan: A War Hero Remembered

Early Life and Military Service

Sokrat Galustyan was born on October 15, 1920, in the village of Uplistsikhe, Georgia. He attended secondary school and was drafted into the Red Army in 1940. After completing his training as a young fighter, he was sent to the front lines in August 1941.

Heroism on the Battlefields

Galustyan distinguished himself during the battles of World War II. As a machine gunner in the 8th Guards Separate Machine Gun and Artillery Battalion, he played a crucial role in the crossing of the Dnieper River. On March 14, 1944, he crossed the Dnieper near the village of Kaspetovka and established a foothold on the opposite bank.

Defending the Bridgehead

On March 16, German forces launched an attack to retake the bridgehead, but Galustyan fought back valiantly. Firing his machine gun until it ran out of ammunition, he then engaged in hand-to-hand combat, successfully defending the position he had captured two days earlier.

Recognition and Demobilization

In recognition of his bravery and heroism, Galustyan was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on June 3, 1944. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal. After suffering a wound during the Soviet advance in April 1945, he was demobilized from the army.

Post-War Life and Legacy

Sokrat Galustyan returned to his hometown of Gori after the war. He passed away on March 23, 1981, leaving behind a legacy of courage and sacrifice. He is remembered as a true hero who played a significant role in the Allied victory over Nazi Germany.
