Early Life and Spiritual AwakeningKazushige Abe was born into a family of Buddhist priests in Miharu, Fukushima prefecture. He spent his early years immersed in Catholic and Shinto teachings before experiencing several existential crises during his teenage years. After suffering from Japanese encephalitis, he began pondering the nature of death.
Years of Searching and Transition
In high school, Abe underwent a period of spiritual exploration, embracing various religious sects before discovering Zen Buddhism through an encounter with philosopher Kiyoshi Hoshi. He moved to Tokyo to pursue higher education in Chinese literature, where he continued his spiritual quest by practicing zazen meditation.
Literary and Professional Pursuits
Alongside his spiritual endeavors, Abe began writing and publishing his work in literary magazines. He also experimented with various professions, including advertising and teaching. Despite the allure of a lucrative career, Abe chose to work at a waste incineration plant in Yamaguchi after graduating from university.
Ordination and Asceticism
In 1983, Abe embraced the monastic life by taking vows at Tenryu-ji temple in Kyoto. He spent three years in solitary asceticism in the mountains before returning to his hometown in Fukushima and becoming the assistant priest at his father's temple, Fukushi-ji.
Writing Debut and Later Career
Abe made his literary debut in 2000 with the publication of "The Ship's Bow in the Water." He received the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 2001 for his novella, "Flowers at the Edge of This World." Since 2008, he has served as the abbot of Fukushi-ji and has continued to publish extensively.
Present Activities
Abe is currently a prolific writer, teacher, and Zen master. He continues to publish widely, including novels, essays, and literary criticism. He is also an active advocate for interfaith dialogue and social justice.
