Biography of Solomon Golbrykh

Solomon Golbrykh was a Soviet and Ukrainian cinematographer, director of documentary films. He was born in Tver. He worked as an assistant cinematographer at the Ukrainian Studio of Chronicle and Documentary Films in Kharkov. From 1937 to 1939, he served in the Red Army and participated in combat operations against the Japanese army in Mongolia in 1939. Starting from 1940, he worked as a cinematographer at the Studio of Chronicle and Documentary Films in Kiev. During the Great Patriotic War, he served as a front-line cinematographer under the command of the Main Political Directorate of the Soviet Army, capturing footage on the Southwest, Stalingrad, Don, Central, Steppe, and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts. He filmed famous Soviet figures such as Zhukov, Rokossovsky, Malinovsky, Chuikov, Khrushchev, and documented the Korsun-Shevchenkovsky operation and the heroic defense of Stalingrad (included in the documentary film "Stalingrad"). Solomon Golbrykh, a military cinematographer, shot over ten thousand meters of film during his twenty months on the front, capturing the combat actions of the Soviet front. He filmed in tank troops, infantry, and other branches of the military. He particularly distinguished himself during the filming of the material during the Battle of Stalingrad. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War (twice), the Medals for the Defense of Stalingrad, the Capture of Berlin, and others. After the war, from 1945 to 1988, Solomon Golbrykh worked as a cinematographer and film director at the Ukrainian Studio of Chronicle and Documentary Films in Kiev (Ukrkinokhroniki). He was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine for his contribution to the chronicle of the Great Patriotic War and the development of documentary cinematography.
