Early Life and Basketball Career
Chadwick Boseman Hughes, commonly known as Chad L. Coleman, is an American educator, athlete, and actor. Standing at an impressive 6 feet 11 inches (2.11 m) tall, Hughes has a significant basketball background. His father, Ronald Hughes, played basketball at California State University, Fullerton, and is a sociology professor there.
Hughes attended Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California, where he played on the basketball team, graduating in 1997. Despite signing a letter of intent to play at Tulane University at age 17, Hughes ultimately decided not to attend, resulting in a two-year ban from NCAA basketball. He spent the 1997-98 school year at Fork Union Military Academy before enrolling at the University of California, Berkeley. Although ineligible, he practiced with the California Golden Bears team.
After an appeal to the NCAA, Hughes was reinstated on November 3, 1998, and played his first collegiate game that night. He played for the Golden Bears for four years, serving as team captain. He also had brief stints with the Harlem Globetrotters and attempted to join the National Basketball Association in 2003. Hughes has also played professionally in the United States Basketball League, American Basketball Association, and Mexico's professional basketball league.
Educational Career
In addition to his basketball career, Hughes holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Master's degree in Education from UC Berkeley. He earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education and Policy Studies from the University of Georgia's Institute of Higher Education in 2013 for his dissertation titled "Approaching Signing Day: The College Choice Process of Actively Recruited Student-Athletes."
Hughes is currently an instructor and faculty member at Duke University's Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Justice. He has also served as a Visiting Academic Instructor at Stanford University and an Assistant Director of Stanford's EDGE Doctoral Scholars Program. In 2018, he was part of the selection committee that chose Jim Knowlton as Berkeley's Director of Athletics.
Acting Career
Hughes made his acting debut in 2022, landing the role of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in HBO's "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty." The role marked Hughes' first major acting appearance, and the series has since been renewed for a second season.
