Early Life and Career BeginningsIn Madrid, Spain, a young Sonya Lafuente embarked on her skating journey at the age of four. By 2003, she made her international debut as a novice skater, winning a bronze medal at the Merano Cup. The following year, she claimed victory at the same tournament.
Junior Success and International Breakthrough
At the 2005-2006 season, Lafuente transitioned to the junior level, making her debut at the World Junior Championships. That season, she achieved a historic milestone by securing a silver medal at the Mexican leg of the Junior Grand Prix, marking the first-ever Spanish medal in the event's history.
Senior Debut and Olympic Appearance
Lafuente debuted as a senior skater in 2008, competing at the European and World Championships. While her initial rankings were modest, she achieved significant success in 2009 by finishing eighth at the Nebelhorn Trophy, earning Spain a spot in the women's singles event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
International Triumphs
In the 2010-2011 season, Lafuente showcased her prowess, winning her first senior international tournament, the Golden Spin of Zagreb. At the European Championships, she improved her position to 12th. She went on to win a silver medal at the Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey.
New Horizon in Canada
In search of further growth, Lafuente relocated to Canada in 2012 to train under renowned coaches Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson. This move proved to be a pivotal moment in her career, as she continued to push her limits and achieve success on the international stage.
