Sonny Davey: A Boy with a Unique Difference

Birth and the Growing Birthmark

Sonny Davey, a 23-month-old from Cranbrook, Devon, was born with a birthmark on the left side of his face that rapidly grew to the size of a cricket ball. The capillary hemangioma, a benign tumor of overgrown blood vessels, became a subject of unwanted attention and cruel comments from strangers.

Facing Unkind Remarks

Sonny's mother, Lucy Denny, often encounters rude and insensitive remarks about her son's appearance. "People stare as we walk down the street, and they can be cruel," she says. "One person told me they were glad their child didn't have something like that on their face. Another shouted, 'Oh my God, what's wrong with your baby?'"

A Mother's Determination

Despite the negativity, Lucy refuses to let it define her son. "I tell Sonny that his birthmark means he's special, that he was kissed by an angel," she says. "He's the happiest, most beautiful boy. It breaks my heart to think that he might have this for the rest of his life."

Medical Intervention

Doctors diagnosed Sonny's birthmark as a capillary hemangioma a few weeks after his birth. He was prescribed beta-blockers and other medications to suppress its growth, but with limited success. Lucy notes the medications came with their own set of side effects.

Hopes for Surgery and the Future

Sonny is scheduled for surgery in the near future, one of several procedures planned to improve his appearance. Lucy remains optimistic that the birthmark will diminish over time. "He'll have scarring after the operations, but to me, he will always be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," she says.

A Call for Sensitivity

Lucy emphasizes the importance of kindness and understanding towards those with differences. "I want people to think before they speak," she says. "Sonny has feelings, and as his parents, we're trying our best. What happens now will stay with him for the rest of his life."
