Biography of Sophia Lillis
Sophia Lillis was born on February 13, 2002, in the Crown Heights area of Brooklyn, New York. She has a twin brother named Jake and a stepbrother named Philip. Sophia's parents divorced when she was a child, and her mother, Juliana, later married Christopher Mellevold. Christopher became a close figure in Sophia's life and was the one who suggested she try her hand at acting. At a young age, Sophia began attending the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute's acting studio. The school has produced notable alumni such as Al Pacino, Angelina Jolie, Steve Buscemi, Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Christoph Waltz, Uma Thurman, and many others.
Early Acting Career
Sophia made her debut in the film industry in 2013 in the short film "Lipstick Stain." The 10-minute drama by filmmaker Dagny Looper did not gain much recognition and did not propel Sophia to stardom. Her next project was the comedy film "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (2014), an adaptation of William Shakespeare's play. Although the film received positive ratings, it did not gain much fame. In 2016, Sophia appeared in the film "37," which won the Silver Saint George for Best Director at the Moscow International Film Festival. Her performance in this psychological drama caught the attention of Hollywood.
Breakthrough Role in "It"
On June 22, 2016, director Andres Muschietti chose Sophia for one of the lead roles in his horror film "It." The remake of the 1990 television film, based on Stephen King's novel, went through various production challenges. After several changes in the screenplay and director, Muschietti took over the project. Sophia was cast as Beverly "Bev" Marsh, the only girl in the "Losers' Club" who becomes a central figure in the terrifying game orchestrated by the clown Pennywise. Muschietti wanted the horror to be genuine, so he kept Sophia and the other young actors away from Bill Skarsgard, who played Pennywise, until they filmed their first encounter with him. Sophia and her co-stars agreed that Skarsgard truly embodied the menacing clown who wanted to kill them all. "It" became the highest-grossing horror film of all time, earning around $695 million worldwide. Warner Bros. announced a sequel, set to be released on September 6, 2019.
Future Projects
Apart from "It," Sophia appeared in two music videos in 2017: The War on Drugs' "Nothing to Find" and Sia's "Santa's Coming For Us." She also starred in the short film "Tiny Mammals." Sophia's upcoming projects include the HBO miniseries "Sharp Objects," a crime drama in which she plays the young Camille Parker, with the adult version portrayed by famous actress Amy Adams. The series is set to premiere in June 2018.
