Sophie Theallet is an American fashion designer of French origin. In 2009, she was awarded the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Her dresses have been worn by influential women such as Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States, and she has received unwavering support from industry leaders like Anna Wintour and Cathy Horyn. Biography
Sophie Theallet was born and raised in the picturesque mountain town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre on the southwest coast of France. Growing up with five brothers, she was a true tomboy. However, like most girls, she read fairy tales about princesses and dreamed of beautiful dresses. At the age of 8, Sophie began sketching her first designs. As a teenager, her fashion vision was influenced by Vivienne Westwood's creations, and during a trip to London, she fell in love with the vibrant colors of punk rock. Since then, fashion and music have remained closely connected in her eyes, which is reflected in her collaboration with sound designer and composer Henri Struck. For each runway show, Sophie and Henri create a rich, provocative, and poetic soundtrack that tells a story of its own for each collection.
At the age of 18, Sophie moved to Paris to study at the prestigious fashion school Studio Bercot and received the National Young Designer Award a year before graduation. She was entrusted with creating a collection for the prestigious Parisian department store Printemps. After finishing school, Sophie chose to work with one of the most influential designers of her time, Jean-Paul Gaultier. She believes that Gaultier taught her how to work with colors and create a cohesive concept for collections, but most importantly, he taught her to trust her instincts and fear nothing.
A few years later, she joined the team of Tunisian-born designer Azzedine Alaïa, where she became a mature designer and worked as Alaïa's right-hand for ten years. She worked on main collections, knitwear, and accessories, constantly traveling and absorbing the history of fashion from different cultures, while honing her professional skills. After moving to New York, Sophie continued to work with Alaïa and began freelancing for other fashion brands. In 2005, she released a small exclusive collection for Motu Tane, which gained attention for its beauty, simplicity, and sensuality. After two successful years with Motu Tane, Sophie felt ready to launch her own label, Sophie Theallet.
Her collections and reviews immediately made their way into the pages of American Vogue, The New York Times, and Time, as well as being stocked in the most luxurious stores in Europe and the United States, including Barneys in New York, Colette in Paris, and Browns in London. Sophie Theallet's collections possess an incredibly rare quality: they are both unique and universal, standing out from other brands but appealing to women of all ages. Her clients love her designs because they feel special in them.
