Ran Araki: A Prodigy in Rock Climbing

Ran Araki is a Japanese rock climber specializing in competition bouldering and lead climbing. In 2023, he became the first climber ever to win both the Lead and Bouldering World Cups in his debut adult season.

Early Career

Prior to 2023, Araki competed in international youth climbing competitions.

International Debut and World Cup Dominance

In 2023, Araki made his debut at the adult international level, placing fifth in bouldering at the Hachioji World Cup. He then earned his first medal, a silver in bouldering at the Salt Lake City World Cup in May. This was followed by his first World Cup bouldering win in Innsbruck in June, where he also secured the 2023 Men's Bouldering title.

He went on to win his first adult World Cup medal in lead with a bronze in Chamonix in July. He then placed first in Briançon in July and second in Bern in August, both in lead climbing.

Araki secured two more World Cup victories in Koper and Wujiang, both in September. He was also crowned the 2023 Men's Lead title holder.

Asian Games Success

Shortly after his Wujiang performance, Araki won gold in the men's combined sport climbing event at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, marking his Asian Games debut.

Olympic Qualification and Success

Araki qualified for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics at the 2023 Asian Olympic Climbing Qualifier in Jakarta, where he placed first in the men's combined bouldering and lead competition. In Paris, he earned an Olympic silver medal.
