Spirydon Vangheli Biography
Early Life and EducationBorn on June 14, 1932, in the village of Grinăuți, Spirydon Vangheli was the son of a peasant family in Bessarabia (now Moldova). After losing his mother at age 12, he pursued higher education and graduated from the philological faculty of Ion Creangă State Pedagogical Institute in Chișinău in 1952.
Literary Beginnings and Teaching
Following his military service, Vangheli worked as a teacher in a rural school. It was during this time that he began writing, with his short stories appearing frequently in periodicals. In 1955, his works were featured in the anthology "Young Voices."
Debut Novel and Critical Acclaim
Vangheli's literary debut novel, "In the Land of Butterflies," was published in 1962. However, it was his 1966 fairy tale "The Adventures of Guguță" that brought him wide recognition. The tale earned him the Second All-Union Prize for Children's Literature in 1970.
Translations and Impact
Vangheli's works have been translated into numerous languages, including Russian, German, English, Japanese, Bulgarian, and Armenian. He also translated works by renowned authors such as Samuel Marshak, Boris Zakhoder, and Astrid Lindgren into Moldavian.
Later Years and Recognition
On June 15, 2007, the National Children's Library Ion Creangă honored Vangheli on his 75th birthday with a special letter of recognition presented by the Minister of Education and Youth, Victor Țvirkun.
