Birth and Early Life

Princess Victoria Louise was born on September 13, 1892, as the seventh child and only daughter of German Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife, Augusta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg. Nicknamed "Sissy" by her family, Victoria Louise was described by historian Justin Vovk as intelligent like her grandmother Empress Victoria, dignified like her mother, but willful and authoritarian like her father.

Marriage and Family

In 1912, Victoria Louise met Ernst August, the wealthy heir of the Duke of Cumberland. They were instantly smitten, but marriage negotiations were delayed due to political complications. Ernst August was also the heir to the Hanoverian throne, which had been annexed by Prussia. After lengthy negotiations, Victoria Louise and Ernst August married on May 24, 1913. The wedding, attended by reigning monarchs from across Europe, was a major event prior to the outbreak of World War I.

Victoria Louise had five children with Ernst August:

Ernst August Georg Wilhelm Christian Ludwig Franz Joseph Nikolaus Oskar (1914-1987)

Georg Wilhelm Ernst August Friedrich Axel (1915-2006)

Frederica Louise Thyra Victoria Margaret Sophia Olga Cecilia Isabella Christa (1917-1981)

Christian Oscar Ernst August Wilhelm Victor George Heinrich (1919-1981)

Welf Heinrich Ernst August Georg Christian Berthold Friedrich Wilhelm Louis Ferdinand (1923-1997)

World War I and Aftermath

With the outbreak of World War I, Victoria Louise's husband and some of her brothers joined the Nazi party. Victoria Louise herself avoided party membership but supported Nazi leaders financially. After the war, Ernst August was stripped of his British titles and the Duchy of Brunswick, where he and Victoria Louise had resided, was dissolved.

Later Life and Legacy

Post-war, Victoria Louise dedicated her time to restoration projects, social events, hunting, and horse exhibitions. She also engaged in charitable work, sponsoring holidays for underprivileged children. Victoria Louise died on December 11, 1980, at the age of 88.

In honor of her, two Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt Aktien-Gesellschaft ships were named after Victoria Louise: "Prinzessin Victoria Luise" and "Victoria Luise." Additionally, a German armored deck cruiser of the same type bore her name. Victoria Louise also held the rank of Chief of the Prussian 2nd Leib Hussar Regiment from 1909.
