Predecessors and Formation
The origins of the Russian rock band Spleen can be traced back to 1986, when bass guitarist Alexander Morozov and vocalist Alexander Vasiliev formed a music duo at the Leningrad Institute of Aviation Instrumentation. Inspired by the self-expression of the institute's rock group, the young duo aspired to create their own musical collective.
Debut and Early Years
In 1994, after Vasiliev completed his military service, the band officially emerged under the name "Spleen." The name was inspired by a line from a poem by Sergei Black, a prominent Russian Silver Age poet. The early lineup included Vasiliev, Morozov, keyboardist Nikolai Rostovsky, and saxophonist Alexandra, Vasiliev's wife.
Breakthrough Success
In 1994, Spleen released their debut album "Pylnaya Byl" (Dusty Tale), which sold over 10,000 copies in St. Petersburg. The album's songs "Zhertva talogo l'da" (Victim of the Thawed Ice) and "Skazka" (Fairy Tale) gained airplay on St. Petersburg radio stations. The band's popularity surged in 1995 with the release of their second album "Collector of Arms" and the music video for "Bud moyey ten'yu" (Be My Shadow).
Critical Acclaim and Commercial Success
Throughout the late 1990s, Spleen continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including "Fonar' pod glazom" (Lantern Under the Eye) in 1997 and "Granatovyy al'bom" (Pomegranate Album) in 1998. The band's sound evolved into a blend of alternative rock, indie rock, and folk elements.
Line-Up Changes and Creative Evolution
Over the years, Spleen has undergone several line-up changes. In 2005, guitarist Stas Berezovsky left the band, followed by bassist Jan Nikolenko and saxophonist Vladimir Kolyada in 2007. Despite these departures, the band continued to tour and release new music, including 2007's "Razdvoenie lichnosti" (Split Personality) and 2009's "Signal iz kosmosa" (Signal from Space).
Recent Developments and Future
Spleen remains active in the Russian music scene, releasing new albums and performing at concerts and festivals. In 2018, the band released their 16th album "Vstrechnaya polosa" (Oncoming Lane). Alexander Vasiliev is known for his philosophical lyrics and the band's introspective and emotionally resonant music. Spleen continues to captivate audiences with their unique sound and enduring popularity in the Russian rock landscape.
