The Accidental Amputation
A British grandfather's woodworking adventure took an unexpected and traumatic turn when he accidentally severed his own hand.
A DIY Disaster
While building a playhouse for his beloved granddaughters, 60-year-old Stan Smith's arm became caught in a saw. Despite the gruesome nature of the accident, quick-thinking and skilled medical intervention prevented Smith from becoming permanently disabled.
The Aftermath and Emergency
Initially calm, Smith realized the severity of the situation and applied pressure to the stump, minimizing blood loss. This quick action saved his life, as excessive bleeding could have led to unconsciousness and a fatal outcome.
Reuniting the Hand
Smith's wife, Gail, discovered the severed hand in the grass and placed it in a plastic bag. It was rushed to the hospital, where a team of surgeons led by Plastic Surgeon Alastair Platt performed a 7-hour surgery.
Surgical Precision
The surgeons reattached the bones, blood vessels, tendons, and nerves in a painstaking and intricate procedure. Using microscopes, they skillfully restored functionality to the hand's 25 tendons and three major nerves.
Recovery and Resilience
Remarkably, Smith's hand now functions as if the accident had never happened. Delighted with the results, he has purchased a new saw and is eagerly expanding his home kitchen. Despite his ordeal, Smith's love for woodworking remains as strong as ever.
