Biography of Stanley Babin
Composer and pianist, Stanley Babin was born into the family of Rabbi David Babin and his wife Lydia. He had four siblings. In 1933, the Babin family moved to Tel Aviv where Stanley began studying music with Frank Pelleg and made his first stage appearance. His unique talents helped support his family during difficult times.
In 1947, at the age of 16, Stanley moved to New York City and became a student of renowned pianist Artur Schnabel. He was the youngest student of Schnabel at that time but his talent was far beyond his years. From 1949 to 1953, he studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia under the guidance of Isabella Vengerova.
Returning to professional performances, Babin secured a new agent, Arthur Judson. He won his first Concert Artists' Guild Award and performed with the New York Philharmonic. Critics praised his outstanding talent and incredible artistry. Encouraged by his success, Babin embarked on a concert tour with the Pittsburgh Symphony, performing Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2.
Babin also gave solo concerts that were well-received by audiences in the northern United States, Canada, and major European capitals. One of his notable performances was playing Beethoven's 'Emperor' Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic. Although he was primarily known as a pianist, Babin also composed music and extensively studied the cultural heritage of his homeland, including Semitic languages, Jewish religious texts, and archaeological excavations in the Israeli deserts.
