Biography of Stasis Krasauskas
Stasis Krasauskas was a Lithuanian graphic artist, known for his mastery in various techniques such as woodcut, lithography, linocut, and etching. He was born in Lithuania and received his secondary education in Kaunas. After completing high school, he enrolled in the Vilnius State Institute of Physical Education and Sports from 1948 to 1952. During his time there, Krasauskas excelled in swimming and won several championships in different styles and distances in the Lithuanian SSR.
In 1952, Krasauskas pursued his artistic education at the Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR in Vilnius. He studied there until 1958 and later became a professor at the same institution in 1961. Krasauskas's works are characterized by their metaphorical nature, conciseness, and the expressive use of white lines against a black background.
Notable Works
One of Krasauskas's most well-known works is the linocut titled "Youth" (1961), which was widely used as the emblem for the magazine "Youth." This artwork features a circular maiden's face adorned with wheat spikes instead of hair. The same image is also reproduced on the artist's tombstone. Krasauskas also created illustrations for various literary works, including the poems of Justinas Marcinkevičius, Eduardas Meželaitis, and Aloyzas Paulauskas.
His artistic achievements were recognized with numerous awards and titles. He was awarded the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR in 1965 and was honored as a Merited Artist of the Lithuanian SSR in 1968. In 1976, Krasauskas received the State Prize of the USSR, and in 1977, he was named a People's Artist of Lithuania.
Awards and Honors
Throughout his career, Krasauskas received several prestigious awards and honors, including the Order of the Badge of Honor. He also won a bronze medal at the International Leipzig Book Art Exhibition in 1962. In addition to these accolades, he was recognized with the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR in 1965 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1976.
Stasis Krasauskas passed away and was buried at the Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius.
