Biography of Sébastien Bourdon

Sébastien Bourdon was a French painter and engraver. After enduring many hardships in his youth, he found himself in Rome, where he received assistance from Claude Lorrain. In 1643, he arrived in Paris and painted "The Crucifixion of Saint Paul" for the Notre-Dame church (now housed in the Louvre) along with several other paintings. During the civil war, Bourdon sought refuge in Sweden and became the court painter for Queen Christina in 1652. Upon his return to Paris, he became one of the founders and later the rector of the Academy of Painting. Bourdon also excelled in engraving, and his engravings are highly valued by art enthusiasts. The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg houses one of Bourdon's paintings, "The Dead Christ at the Feet of the Virgin Mary."
