Biography of Stefan Persson
IntroductionStefan Persson is a Swedish entrepreneur and the largest shareholder of H&M, a multinational clothing retailer. He has earned billions by making designer clothing accessible to everyone.

Early Life and Career of H&M
Stefan Persson's father, Erling Persson, founded Hennes (which means "For her" in Swedish) in 1947. The company initially produced small quantities of women's clothing and sold it directly from the warehouse. Despite the dominance of expensive department stores in Sweden at the time, the affordability of Hennes' clothing line gained popularity among middle-class women. Erling Persson subsequently opened a network of small, unpretentious stores across the country.

In 1968, Mauritz Widforss, a seller of hunting clothes, became a co-owner of the company, and it was renamed Hennes & Mauritz (H&M). The addition of a men's line expanded the company's offerings.

International Expansion
Stefan Persson, who had completed his education at universities in Stockholm and Lund, dreamt of transforming the small company into an international corporation. After much debate within the family, it was decided that H&M would enter the international market, beginning with expansion into England.
In 1976, Persson attracted customers to his first London store on Oxford Circus by giving away free records of the popular Swedish group ABBA. This marketing trick proved successful and drew a crowd. Six years later, Erling Persson entrusted the company to his son, Stefan. Under Stefan's leadership, Hennes & Mauritz grew rapidly throughout Europe and expanded to other continents, including the United States, Australia, Canada, and China. As of now, H&M has 1400 stores in 28 countries and employs over 60,000 people.
In 2000, H&M shocked industry experts with its rapid expansion into the American market. Goldman Sachs analysts noted that no other European retail seller had expanded so quickly and aggressively in the United States. This expansion solidified H&M's position as a global fashion retailer.
Success and Strategy
Stefan Persson is known for his ability to capture customers' attention by associating his brand with celebrities and well-known designers. H&M collaborates with famous individuals such as Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, and Madonna to create limited edition collections. This strategy appeals to customers who cannot afford high-end designer clothing but still desire a sense of connection to the fashion world.
However, success in the fashion industry requires more than just marketing. H&M's ability to quickly produce and deliver new designs to the market sets it apart from competitors. The company's entire process, from the initial design concept to mass production, takes a maximum of three weeks. This efficiency allows H&M to stay ahead of trends and offer customers the latest fashion at affordable prices.
In addition to his business acumen, Persson is known for his frugality. Despite being the richest person in Sweden, he leads a relatively modest lifestyle and discourages extravagance among his employees. This focus on cost-cutting and intense labor has contributed to H&M's success.
Philanthropy and Personal Life
While known for his stinginess, Persson pays substantial taxes and is considered one of the largest private taxpayers in the world. He donates a portion of H&M's profits to combat poverty and provide clean drinking water in Africa and Asia.
Persson leads a private life and avoids glamorous events unless necessary for business purposes. He is the owner of the Stockholm football club Djurgårdens IF, but his involvement in the sports world is minimal compared to other billionaires.
Despite occasional peculiarities, such as being stopped by police for purchasing an excessive amount of caviar, Stefan Persson remains a figure of admiration and respect in the business world. His ability to combine affordability with style has made H&M a global leader in the fashion industry.
