Biography of Stefania Woytowicz

Stefania Woytowicz is a Polish soprano singer specializing in classical music. She was born and raised in Brest and later moved to Warsaw in 1943. After the end of World War II, she relocated to Krakow and enrolled at the University of Krakow, studying Romance languages. At the same time, she also studied at the Krakow Music Academy under the guidance of Stanislawa Zawadzka.

In 1950, Woytowicz won the Bach Singers' Competition in Poznan, and in 1954, she became one of the laureates of the International Festival "Prague Spring." She embarked on concert tours to the USSR, China, and Austria in 1955 and continued to tour worldwide for over three decades. She became a regular participant in the music festival "Warsaw Autumn."

Woytowicz did not perform on opera stages but took part in several complete opera recordings, including Verdi's "La Forza del Destino" and Moniuszko's "Halka." Instead, she focused on chamber and vocal-symphonic repertoire. Her name is associated with numerous significant works of Polish music, such as Henryk Górecki's Third Symphony, which she performed at the premiere in 1977 as well as on the first recording in 1978 and two later recordings. She also worked with composers Krzysztof Penderecki, Tadeusz Baird, and others.

From 1977 to 1992, Woytowicz served as the chairperson of the Warsaw Musical Society. She continued to contribute to the classical music scene and left a lasting impact on the Polish music industry.
