Early Life and Career

Stephanie Berindey, known professionally as Steffi Duna, was born on February 8, 1910 in Budapest, Hungary, to parents from Czechoslovakia. From a young age, she displayed a talent for dance, performing with a European ballet company at the age of 13.

Hollywood Debut

Despite her father's initial disapproval, Duna pursued her dance career, training in renowned schools in Budapest. Her journey to Hollywood in 1932 marked a turning point in her life. Though she initially spoke no English, she immersed herself in the language to accelerate her career.

Exotic Starlet of the Silver Screen

With her petite frame and exotic appearance, Duna caught the attention of filmmakers. Throughout the 1930s, she portrayed a wide range of characters, often playing sultry and passionate femme fatales, despite her European background. Her memorable performance in "La Cucaracha" (1934) showcased her singing and dancing abilities.

Broadway and Film Debut

In April 1933, Duna graced the Broadway stage for a brief run in "The Threepenny Opera." Her film debut came in 1932 with "The Indiscretions of Eve" in the UK. Upon her move to the United States in 1933, she signed with RKO Radio Pictures and starred in films such as "Man of Two Worlds" (1934) and "Panama Lady" (1939).

Later Career and Legacy

Duna's film career peaked in the 1940s, with notable roles in "One New York Night" (1935), "Dancing Pirate" (1936), and "Waterloo Bridge" (1940). Despite her popularity, she remained primarily a supporting actress, appearing in a total of 27 films before retiring from the screen in 1940.

Personal Life

Duna was married twice. Her first husband, John Carroll, was a fellow actor with whom she had a daughter, Julianna Benito. Her second marriage to Dennis O'Keefe, an actor, screenwriter, and director, lasted from 1940 until his death from lung cancer in 1968. Together, they had a son, James O'Keefe, who became a director and producer. Steffi Duna passed away on April 22, 1992, at the age of 82 in Beverly Hills, California.
