Stein Erik Hagen was born on July 22, 1956, in Norway. He received his education at Kjpmannsinsituttet, which is now part of the Norwegian School of Management. From 1973 to 1975, Stein underwent training at the Commerce Institute - Wang.

In the 1970s, Stein, along with his father, founded the first discount store, where products were sold at lower prices.
