Early Life and Career

Stepan Konstantinovich Ananyin was born on June 22 (July 5), 1904, in a working-class family in Sverdlovsk, Russia. He received a basic education and worked in a textile factory and later in a factory in his hometown. Ananyin joined the Red Army in 1937 and graduated from the Osoaviakhim flight school.

World War II

At the outbreak of World War II, Ananyin was on the front lines as commander of the 299th Assault Aviation Regiment. On May 31, 1943, he led a group of 12 Il-2 aircraft in an attack on an enemy airfield, destroying or damaging 18 enemy aircraft. During the return flight, he engaged in an aerial battle, shooting down two enemy planes. Despite being severely wounded, he managed to land his own aircraft on friendly territory.

By July 1943, Ananyin had flown 219 combat missions and shot down four enemy aircraft. In recognition of his courage and heroism, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on September 8, 1943.

Post-War Career

After the war, Ananyin continued to serve in the Soviet Air Force. He retired in 1953 with the rank of colonel and returned to Sverdlovsk, where he worked and lived until his death on January 15, 1960.
