Stetsko, Yaroslav
Yaroslav Stetsko was a Ukrainian nationalist politician and leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN).
Early Life
Born on January 19, 1912, in Ternava, Austria-Hungary (now Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine), Stetsko was the son of a priest and grew up in a patriotic Ukrainian family. He became involved in nationalist activities while still in school.
OUN Membership
After graduating from high school, Stetsko joined the OUN, an underground organization seeking to establish an independent Ukrainian state. He rose through the ranks quickly, becoming a member of the OUN's leadership by the late 1930s.
World War II
During World War II, Stetsko played a significant role in the OUN's involvement in the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. He became the head of the OUN's "Bandera Faction" after Stepan Bandera's arrest.
In 1941, Stetsko proclaimed an independent Ukrainian state in Lviv, but the declaration was promptly suppressed by the Germans. Stetsko was imprisoned in a concentration camp by the Nazis, where he spent several years.
Post-War Activities
After the war, Stetsko escaped to Germany and continued to lead the Bandera Faction of the OUN. He was involved in political and diplomatic activities aimed at securing international support for Ukrainian independence.
Anti-Soviet Activism
Stetsko was a staunch anti-Soviet activist. He organized numerous protests and campaigns against Soviet rule in Ukraine. He also established the Anti-Bolshevik Bloc of Nations (ABN), an international organization opposed to communism.
Leadership of the Ukrainian World Congress
In 1967, Stetsko became the President of the Ukrainian World Congress, an organization representing Ukrainian communities around the world. He held this position until his death in 1980.
Legacy
Yaroslav Stetsko is remembered as a prominent figure in the Ukrainian nationalist movement. He was a tireless advocate for Ukrainian independence and dedicated his life to the struggle against Soviet oppression.
