Early Life and Education
Ivan Mikhailovich Domontovich was born into a prominent Cossack family in Chernihiv-Sivershchyna. His lineage can be traced back to Ivan Mikhailovich Domontovich, a general judge during the rule of Demyan Mnogogreshny and Ivan Samoylovich. Ivan Mikhailovich received his education at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. In October 1763, he was enrolled as a student in the academy's class of poetics.
Military Service
After completing his studies, Domontovich entered the service of the Zaporozhian Host. In 1770, he was promoted to the rank of military comrade, and in 1779, he was raised to the rank of bunbunchuk comrade. Domontovich played an active role in the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, particularly in the siege of Azov.
Judicial Career
In 1782, Domontovich became a member of the Sosnytsia Uyezd Court. In 1798, he was appointed as the zemstvo judge of Sosnytsia Uyezd. He served in this capacity until his death.
Personal Life
Domontovich was married to Varvara, daughter of Zemstvo Judge I. Valkevich. They had six children: Vasily (born 1777), Ivan (mentioned in 1815), Grigory (born 1801), Alexander (born 1805), Nikolai (born 1807), and Tatiana (born circa 1780). Ivan Mikhailovich and his brother owned the village of Kudrovka in Sosnytsia Uyezd, where they resided from 1784 to 1798.
