Early Life and Education

Born on November 10, 1918, in the village of Klinok, Belarus, Stepan Andreevich Karnach was raised in a farming family. He completed his rural education in 1935 and relocated to Minsk, where he worked at a factory while pursuing his passion for aviation at an aeroclub.

Training and Military Service

In 1938, Karnach joined the Red Army and enrolled in the 8th Odessa Military Aviation School of Pilots named after P.D. Osipenko, graduating in 1940. He initially served as a junior pilot in the 87th Fighter Aviation Regiment.

World War II

Upon the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War in 1941, Karnach took an active role. He fought on the Southern, Crimean, and Steppe Fronts, operating an I-16 aircraft. As a flight commander, deputy squadron commander, and squadron commander in the 247th Fighter Aviation Regiment, he distinguished himself in numerous battles.

Hero of the Soviet Union

On August 9, 1943, while escorting attack aircraft, Karnach engaged in an aerial combat near the villages of Bolshie and Malyye Prokhody-Lintsy. During the fierce battle, he successfully rammed a Me-109 enemy fighter. Despite sustaining damage to his own aircraft, he managed to land safely.

For his exceptional valor, Stepan Andreevich Karnach was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on February 4, 1944. He was credited with 270 combat sorties, 70 air battles, 12 solo kills, and 4 group victories.

Post-War Career

Karnach continued to serve in the Soviet Air Force after the war. He completed advanced training at the Higher Officer Flight-Tactical Courses (1949) and the Military Academy of the General Staff (1958). He retired from active duty in 1973 with the rank of Major General.

Awards and Recognition

Throughout his illustrious career, Karnach was decorated with numerous awards, including the Order of Lenin, three Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Suvorov 3rd Class, two Orders of the Patriotic War 1st Class, two Orders of the Red Star, and various medals.

Legacy

Stepan Andreevich Karnach passed away on February 4, 1991, in Odessa. His legacy as a courageous and skilled fighter pilot continues to inspire generations of aviators in Belarus and beyond.
