Ukrainian Writer and Scholar

Stepan Kelahr is a Ukrainian poet, literary scholar, folklorist, and translator. He is a member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine.

Education and Career

In 1973, Kelahr graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He began his career working in a collective farm. From 1962 to 1982, he worked as a journalist.

Literary Contributions

Kelahr has published works in Ukrainian, Russian, and Moldovan languages. He has translated literature from Belarusian, Bulgarian, Gagauzian, Moldovan, Polish, Romanian, Serbo-Croatian, Turkish, and Romani. Notably, he has translated works by Mihai Eminescu, George Asachi, M. Kozimenko, and A. Salaru, as well as Romani and Gagauzian folktales. Kelahr has also translated Taras Shevchenko's works into Romani.

Academic Research

Kelahr is the author of articles and studies on languages, folklore, culture, and the lives and works of Moldovan and Romanian writers. He has collected and processed Ukrainian folk songs, tales, proverbs, and sayings in Ukrainian villages in Moldova.

Contributions to Language and Education

Kelahr is the compiler of a dialectical-ethnographic dictionary and a Gagauz-Ukrainian school dictionary. These works contribute to the preservation and understanding of Ukrainian and Gagauzian languages and cultures.
