Birth and Early Life
Stepan Maximovich Petrichenko was born on a farm in the Kaluga Governorate, Russia, in 1892. His family moved to Zaporizhia, where he completed grammar school and became a metalworker.
Naval Service and Political Involvement
In 1913, Petrichenko was drafted into the Baltic Fleet and served on the battleship Petropavlovsk. During the Russian Revolution of 1917, he embraced anarcho-syndicalism along with other sailors.
Nargora Island Republic
In December 1917, Petrichenko played a prominent role in establishing the "Soviet Republic of Sailors and Builders" on the Estonian island of Nargora. This short-lived "republic" was dissolved in February 1918 with the arrival of German forces.
Kronshtadt Uprising
After the dissolution of the Nargora Republic, Petrichenko and other rebels sought refuge in Kronshtadt. In 1921, Petrichenko became the leader of the rebel Provisional Revolutionary Committee during the Kronshtadt Uprising. The uprising demanded an end to Communist dictatorship.
Post-Uprising and Emigration
Following the suppression of the uprising, Petrichenko fled to Finland with thousands of other rebels. He worked in lumber mills and became a skilled carpenter. Despite his involvement in the uprising, he did not embrace anarchism.
Collaboration with Soviet Intelligence
In 1922, Petrichenko traveled to Riga and established contact with the Soviet Embassy. He was recruited as an agent of the GPU and became a valuable source of information for the Soviet military intelligence (GRU) in Finland.
Return to Finland and Continued Intelligence Work
After a brief stay in the USSR, Petrichenko returned to Finland and resumed his intelligence activities. He provided important information about Nazi Germany's military preparations ahead of World War II.
Arrest, Trial, and Imprisonment
Petrichenko was arrested by Finnish authorities in 1941. In 1945, he was extradited to the Soviet Union and sentenced to 10 years in prison for "participation in a counterrevolutionary terrorist organization."
Death in Captivity
Stepan Petrichenko died in a prison transfer from Solikamsk to Vladimir in 1947. His legacy as a leader of the Kronshtadt Uprising remains controversial to this day.
