Early Career and Blackburn Rovers
Stefan Henchoz, an accomplished Swiss defender, rose to prominence with German club Hamburger SV. After two seasons, he joined Blackburn Rovers in 1997, where he showcased his defensive prowess for two years.
Liverpool and the Treble
When Blackburn was relegated at the end of the 1998/1999 season, Liverpool manager Gérard Houllier seized the opportunity to bolster his defense. Henchoz's contract included a clause allowing him to transfer to a club offering £3.5 million in the event of Blackburn's relegation. The Reds promptly acquired his services for the stipulated fee.
At Liverpool, Henchoz formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Sami Hyypiä. Their solid partnership proved instrumental in the club's treble-winning campaign in 2001, capturing the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup.
Celtic and Back to Blackburn
Henchoz briefly lost his place in the Liverpool lineup due to injury but regained it to help the club secure a fourth-place finish in the 2003/2004 season, qualifying them for the Champions League. However, after Rafael Benitez replaced Houllier as Liverpool manager in the summer of 2004, Henchoz's Anfield career came to an end.
He moved to Celtic as a free agent in January 2005 but had a short-lived spell before returning to England. In the summer of 2005, Henchoz signed for Wigan Athletic, then managed by former Liverpool reserve Paul Jewell. He became a regular starter for Wigan before a return to Blackburn Rovers a year later.
Injury-Plagued Return and Retirement
Recurring injuries hampered Henchoz's regular appearances at Blackburn. After two disappointing seasons, manager Mark Hughes terminated his contract on May 19, 2008, just days before Hughes himself left Blackburn for Manchester City.
Henchoz announced his retirement from professional football in October 2008.
