Early Life
Stephanie Rice attended Clayfield College in Brisbane, Queensland.
Relationship with Eamon Sullivan
For a while, Rice had a relationship with Australian swimmer Eamon Sullivan. However, due to geographical differences and the difficulty of maintaining a long-distance relationship, they eventually broke up. Despite this, Rice and Sullivan remain friends to this day.
2006 Commonwealth Games
In the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Rice won a gold medal in the individual medley race of 200 meters and another gold medal in the 400-meter race.
2007 World Championships
At the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne, Rice won a bronze medal in the 200-meter individual medley and another bronze medal in the 400-meter race.
Record-breaking Performance
During the Australian Olympic team trials, Rice not only secured a spot on the team but also broke the world record in the 400-meter individual medley.
Beijing Olympics
At the Beijing Olympics, Rice won a gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley. This medal was not only her first but also the first for Australia at the Games, marking the country's 400th overall medal. Rice continued her success by winning two more gold medals in the 200-meter individual medley and the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
Later Career
In 2009, Rice participated in the World Championships again, winning a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley and a bronze medal in the 400-meter race. However, she did not qualify for the final in the 200-meter freestyle. Rice was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia on January 26, 2009.
Controversy and Retirement
In September 2010, Rice was involved in a controversy when she made a homophobic comment on Twitter regarding a rugby match. This led to the termination of her partnership with the company Jaguar and negatively impacted her reputation. Rice officially announced her retirement from professional swimming on April 9, 2014.
