Stephen Greif, a versatile British actor, was born on 26 August 1944, in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England. The future star's childhood home was a historic property once gifted by King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn.
From a diverse family background with Hungarian, Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian ancestry, Greif attended Hoddle House preparatory school with his brothers. Financial difficulties forced him to transition to a school in the impoverished Ladbroke Grove area. He excelled in sports and theater at Sloan School in Chelsea, becoming a swimming and athletics champion.
After a brief stint at the Royal Polytechnic Institute and an unpleasant experience as a junior negotiator in real estate, Greif pursued a different path. He joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating with honors.
Stage and Screen Success
Greif's stage career blossomed at the prestigious West End and Old Vic theaters, performing in productions directed by legends such as Franco Zeffirelli and Laurence Olivier.
On screen, he became known for his memorable roles in television series including "The Last Days of Pompeii," "Zorro," and "The Crown," where he portrayed Speaker of the House of Commons Bernard Weatherill. In film, he appeared in "Nicholas and Alexandra" as Julius Martov and "Casanova" as Donato.
His portrayal of Hans Liepmann in the biographical drama "Eichmann" (2007) further showcased his versatility. One of his last major roles was as the Jewish High Priest Caiaphas in the biblical epic "Risen" (2016).
