Steven Jarislowsky is currently the chairman and CEO of an organization that is one of the most successful investment companies in Canada. He is an American billionaire, financier, and owner of a massive fortune. His personal net worth is estimated at approximately two billion dollars, according to Forbes magazine, which placed Steven on its list of the most influential billionaires on the planet.
Early Life and Education
Steven Jarislowsky was born in 1925 in Berlin. He was the stepson of the owner of a steel mill in Germany, who was expelled from the country by the Nazis for providing shelter to Jewish individuals. The Jarislowsky family was forced to relocate to the United States of America.
In the U.S., Steven completed his schooling and went on to attend Cornell University, where he studied mechanical engineering. When the American army became involved in World War II, Steven enlisted and received training in the Japanese language at the University of Chicago, as he served in counterintelligence in Japan after the war. In 1946, Steven returned to Chicago and continued his education at the university. He graduated with honors, receiving a degree in Asian Studies and Phi Beta Kappa Honors. A few years later, Steven obtained an MBA degree from Harvard University.
Career and Achievements
For the next three years, Steven worked as an engineer at Alcan Aluminum in Montreal. During this time, he briefly returned to America but in 1955, he moved back to Montreal and established his own business - Jarislowsky, Fraser & Company Limited. Currently, Steven Jarislowsky is the chairman and CEO of an organization that is one of the most successful investment companies in Canada.
In addition to his role in his own organization, Steven is actively involved in the management of other companies and institutions. He serves as a director of the C.D. Howe Institute and holds managerial positions in firms such as SNC-Lavalin, Canfor, Southam, Swiss Bank Corp., Velan Valve Inc., Abitibi, and Goodfellow Lumber Inc. Steven, along with his wife, also participates in numerous educational, cultural, and charitable events. He frequently supports television, radio, and mass media outlets. Steven is known for being a strong advocate for quality and ethical business practices.
