Early Life and Education

Stephen Lang was born in New York City to Eugene Lang, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, and Theresa Volmer. He has an older sister, Jane, who became a lawyer, and a brother, David, who took over one of his father's companies. Lang's father made headlines when he left his $150 million fortune to charity, disinheriting his children.

Lang attended a public elementary school in Jamaica before moving to the prestigious Newtown Friends School in Pennsylvania for high school. He later earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from Swarthmore College, also in Pennsylvania. Many years later, Lang was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Jacksonville.

Theatre Career

After graduating, Lang chose acting as his profession. He made his Broadway debut in "The Speed of Darkness," for which he won the Tony Award for Best Actor. He went on to win numerous other awards for his stage work. Lang also shared his expertise as a lecturer at the Actors Studio in New York City.

Film and Television

Lang began his film career in the mid-1980s with roles in "Death of a Salesman" and "Manhunter." He gained wider recognition for his leading role in the social drama "Last Exit to Brooklyn." Lang's popularity continued to grow with his appearances in the television series "Law & Order" and the action film "Man on Fire."

In 2009, Lang's global fame skyrocketed with his portrayal of Colonel Miles Quaritch in James Cameron's groundbreaking science fiction epic "Avatar." He has since played military commanders in "Terra Nova" and "Conan the Barbarian."

Personal Life

Lang has been happily married to costume designer Christine Watson since 1980. They have four children: daughters Lucy and Grace, and sons Daniel and Noah. Despite being in his 60s, Lang maintains excellent physical fitness through a rigorous workout regimen.

Current Projects

Lang is currently reprising his role as the main antagonist in James Cameron's upcoming "Avatar" sequels, which are set to premiere from 2020 to 2025. He recently starred in the thriller "Don't Breathe," the western "Hostiles," the action film "Brutality," and the science fiction movie "Mortal Engines."
