Stephanie McPherson is a Jamaican track and field athlete specializing in the 400-meter dash. She is a two-time Commonwealth Games champion and an Olympic and World Championship medalist.
Early Life and Career
Growing up, McPherson excelled in both track and field and soccer, where she was captain of her school team. Her coach initially envisioned her as a sprinter, but her success in the 400 meters during school competitions made it clear that distance running was her forte.
Breakthrough
In 2013, under the guidance of MVP Club coach Stephen Francis, McPherson made a significant improvement in her performance, shaving almost 2 seconds off her personal best and running the 400 meters in under 50 seconds for the first time. At the World Championships, she ran a similar time but finished fourth.
International Success
In 2014, McPherson won a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay at the World Indoor Championships with a national record time of 3:26.54. Later that year, she claimed a double victory at the Commonwealth Games, winning both the 400 meters and the relay.
At the 2015 World Championships, McPherson finished fifth in the individual 400 meters but helped Jamaica win the gold medal in the relay, overcoming the United States in the final.
Olympic Medalist
In 2016, McPherson was the leading sprinter for Jamaica at the Rio Olympics. She finished sixth in the individual 400 meters but won a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay.
