Dragan Karadžić: Serbian Basketball Legend and Coach
Early Life and Playing CareerDragan Karadžić was born on November 16, 1960, in Nikšić, Montenegro. He spent the majority of his playing career with the renowned Red Star Belgrade club. Between 1980 and 1989, Karadžić played 296 games, amassing 3484 points (averaging 11.8 points per game). He achieved success with Red Star, reaching the playoff finals in 1984 and 1985, and the European Korać Cup final in 1984.
Karadžić's most notable season was 1983/84, where he emerged as the league's top scorer, accumulating 642 points in 43 games (averaging 14.9 points per game). Aside from Red Star, Karadžić played for numerous other clubs throughout his career, including Radnički, Puljanka, Gradina, Sloboda Tuzla, Borac Banja Luka, Ibon Nikšić, and Sopron in Hungary.
International Achievements
Karadžić represented Yugoslavia at the Mediterranean Games in Casablanca in 1983, where he won a gold medal.
Coaching Career
Upon retiring from playing, Karadžić transitioned to coaching. He led Red Star's youth team to Serbian and Yugoslav championship victories in 1998. In 1999, he took over as head coach of Red Star but was later dismissed in 2001. He returned to Red Star in the latter half of the 2006/2007 season but was again let go the following year.
Karadžić's coaching success extended to the national level, where he led the U-20 and U-16 teams to gold medals at the European Championships in 2001 and 2005, respectively. As an assistant coach to Svetislav Pešić for the Yugoslav national team, he captured a gold medal at the 2002 World Championships in Indianapolis.
Club Coaching
From 2008 to 2010, Karadžić coached Serbian club Hemofarm and was named EuroCup Coach of the Year in 2009. Between 2010 and 2012, he led Yenisey Krasnoyarsk in Russia, a club he later rejoined in 2013.
Current Position
In May 2019, Karadžić became an assistant coach to David Gaspar at the women's team of Sopron in Hungary.
Personal Life
Karadžić's wife, Vesna, is a former basketball player, and they have two children: a daughter, Tamara, who plays for Red Star's women's team, and a son, Vuk, who is also a basketball player.
