Steve Darcis: Belgian Tennis Star
Early Life and FamilySteve Darcis, nicknamed "Shark," was born on March 13, 1984, in Liège, Belgium. He began playing tennis at the age of five. His mother, Marie Agnes, was a sports coach, while his father, Alain, was a tennis coach. He has a sister named Céline. As a youth, Darcis idolized tennis legend Pete Sampras.
Professional Career
Rise to Top 100 and Early SuccessDarcis made his ATP Tour debut at the Dutch Open in July 2007. He broke into the Top 100 for the first time on November 26, after winning the Challenger tournament in Finland. In the 2008 season, Darcis competed in the Australian Open and French Open, but exited in the first round of both singles events. However, he reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in doubles with Olivier Rochus. Darcis also advanced to the second round of the US Open. He won his second ATP title in Memphis in March 2008.
Grand Slam Performances and Other Notable Achievements
Darcis competed in three Grand Slams in 2009—the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. He reached the second round only at Wimbledon. Additionally, Darcis reached the semifinals of the Queens tournament. In 2010, he qualified for the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, where he lost to Rafael Nadal in the third round. Darcis failed to qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open.
French Open Breakthrough and Notable Victories
In May 2011, Darcis shocked the tennis world at the French Open. He defeated 22nd-seeded Michael Llodra in the first round. He then ousted Philipp Petzschner in the second round. Darcis's run came to an end in the third round when he lost to Gaël Monfils.
Personal Life and Style of Play
Darcis's coach is his compatriot Reginald Willems. He prefers hard courts and grass, although he won his first ATP title on clay. His strengths on the court include his serve and forehand.
Outside of tennis, Darcis supports the football club Anderlecht. He enjoys fishing in his spare time.
