Early Life and Career


Born on September 7, 1987, in Montreal, Quebec, Aleksandra Wozniak is a Canadian professional tennis player of Polish descent. Her family immigrated from Poland to Canada in 1983. Wozniak is fluent in Polish, French, and English. She has an older sister, Dorota, who also plays tennis. Wozniak picked up a racket for the first time at the age of three. In 2002, at the age of 14, she won the Canadian Championships in the under-16 and under-18 categories. She also became the champion of the Kentucky International Junior Tennis Derby in 2004.

Professional Success


In 2006, Wozniak achieved several notable victories. She won the Challenger in Pittsburgh, where she defeated Victoria Azarenka. She also emerged victorious in Ashland and Hamilton. Later that year, she recorded her first win against a top 100 player, Na Li from China, in Thailand. In November, Wozniak celebrated another triumph in Pittsburgh, defeating Olga Poutchkova, who was ranked 40th in the world.

In 2008, Wozniak made history by reaching the third round of the French Open, becoming the first Quebecois player to achieve this feat in a Grand Slam tournament. In July of the same year, she won her first WTA singles title at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California. This victory made her the first Canadian woman in 20 years to win a WTA singles title and the only player from Quebec to accomplish this.

Unfortunately, Wozniak faced injuries that affected her performance. In 2010, she took a break from competitions due to a forearm injury. After undergoing treatment and returning to the court in 2011, her ranking significantly dropped. In the 2012 Australian Open, she won her first match against Shuai Zhang but was unable to defeat Maria Kirilenko in the next round. Wozniak was forced to end her season early in 2012 due to a shoulder ligament strain at the Bell Challenge.

Wozniak is versatile and enjoys playing on all types of court surfaces, but she particularly favors clay courts. Her strengths lie in her powerful serve and forehand. She also possesses good overhead shots.

She was ranked as high as 21st in the world on June 22, 2009, making her one of the top three highest-ranked Canadian players of all time. She won one WTA tournament and nine ITF tournaments. Wozniak was named "Player of the Year" by Tennis Canada in 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Currently, she holds the highest ranking among Canadian female tennis players in singles.
