Steve Gohouri: Ivorian Footballer
Early CareerSteve Gohouri, an Ivorian central defender, began his professional career at Paris Saint-Germain. However, he only featured for the club's reserve team. He later joined Israeli side Bnei Yehuda for a season before moving to Swiss club Yverdon-Sport in 2000.
European Journey
With Yverdon-Sport, Gohouri reached the Swiss Cup final in 2001. He then moved to Italian club Bologna in 2003, but did not make any appearances. After a stint with Liechtenstein's Vaduz, where he won two domestic cups, Gohouri returned to Switzerland with Young Boys, reaching the Swiss Cup final in 2006.
Borussia Mönchengladbach
In 2006, Gohouri transferred to Borussia Mönchengladbach for a fee of €1.5 million. He became an integral part of the team, playing 14 games in his first season. Despite interest from Lille in 2007, Gohouri remained with Mönchengladbach until 2009.
Personal Struggles
Gohouri's career was marred by personal struggles. In October 2007, he was dropped from the team after being caught at a nightclub on the eve of a game. He also contracted tropical malaria in 2009, and his illness nearly cost him his life.
Wigan Athletic and Later Career
In January 2010, Gohouri joined Wigan Athletic until the end of the season. He made five appearances and scored one goal, but was later released by the club. He briefly played for German fourth-tier side Steinbach before his disappearance and tragic death.
International Career
Gohouri debuted for the Ivory Coast national team in 2006. He scored twice in a friendly against Mauritius in 2007 and made the squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Death
In December 2015, Gohouri went missing. On January 2, 2016, German police confirmed that his body had been found in the Rhine River near Krefeld. The cause of death remains unknown.
