Early Life and Education

Steven Robert Guttenberg was born on August 22, 1958, in Boro Park, Brooklyn, to parents Jerome, an electrical engineer, and Anne Iris, a surgical assistant. He grew up in a Jewish Orthodox community with two sisters. The Guttenbergs later moved to affluent Queens, and Steve attended Plainedge High School in North Massapequa.

Despite his parents' wishes for him to pursue a medical degree, Steve had always wanted to be an actor. He spent his summers taking acting classes with John Houseman at the prestigious Juilliard School. He attended the State University of New York at Albany for a year before moving to California to study acting full-time.

Guttenberg's film debut came in a small uncredited role in the 1977 thriller "Rollercoaster." His first starring role was in Barry Levinson's 1982 comedy "Diner," which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

In 2000, Guttenberg founded the production company Mr. Kirby Productions, named after his beloved drama teacher. He is an avid surfer, golfer, and theater enthusiast.

Guttenberg is also deeply involved in philanthropy. He has funded the construction of a housing facility for children transitioning from foster care and volunteered to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
