Steve James: Snooker Pioneer and History Maker

Steve James, a former professional snooker player from England, etched his name into the annals of the sport with several notable accomplishments.

Early Career and Breakthrough

In 1986, James transitioned from amateur status to professional after triumphing in a unique qualifying series where ten amateur qualifiers faced off against ten ranked professionals for a place on the main tour.

Career Highlights

James' career reached its peak in the early 1990s. In 1990, he captured the Mercantile Credit Classic title by defeating Warren King 10-6 in the final. The following season, he ascended to his highest ranking of number 7 in the world.

Historic Total Clearance

On April 14, 1990, during the 1990 World Championship, James made history by becoming the first player ever to complete a total clearance with a free ball in a professional tournament. He achieved this feat by potting all 16 reds and blacks in sequence against Alex Higgins.

Championship Performances

James continued to shine on the big stage, reaching the quarterfinals of the 1991 World Championship where he shocked defending champion Stephen Hendry 13-11. However, his run ended in the semifinals against Jimmy White.

Unique Distinction

James holds the unique distinction of being the only snooker player to score two century breaks in his Crucible debut (the final stage of the World Championship).
