The Discovery of Stage IV Kidney Cancer
In 2009, Stephen Leisfeld, a resident of Granbury, Texas, experienced persistent back pain. Initially diagnosed with a pulled muscle, his pain worsened over the year that followed. After a computed tomography (CT) scan revealed the presence of kidney stones, Leisfeld underwent further examinations that ultimately led to the diagnosis of stage IV kidney cancer.
Seeking Second Opinions and Innovative Treatments
Despite undergoing a nephrectomy to remove the affected kidney, Leisfield's cancer eventually spread to his lungs. After exploring traditional treatment options that were deemed ineffective due to his compromised kidney function, Leisfeld sought a second opinion at a renowned cancer treatment center.
A Glimmer of Hope at CTCA
The specialists at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) informed Leisfeld that while standard chemotherapy was not viable, they offered alternative radiation therapy approaches, including TomoTherapy and CyberKnife. Leisfeld underwent a regimen of TomoTherapy, followed by CyberKnife treatment for new lesions discovered in his lungs.
Battling the Disease with Determination and Support
Throughout his cancer journey, Leisfeld faced the challenges of chemotherapy and radiation side effects, including fatigue, weight loss, and altered taste sensations. However, his unwavering determination to survive and the unwavering support of his wife provided him with strength and resilience.
The Role of Family and CTCA
Leisfeld's wife, a breast cancer survivor, played a crucial role as his caregiver, providing unwavering support and navigating the complexities of his treatment plan. CTCA staff went above and beyond to provide support and address his wife's concerns, ensuring that they both felt comfortable and informed.
Finding Purpose and Gratitude
After stepping down from his management position at Lockheed Martin, Leisfeld dedicated his time to connecting with others facing similar diagnoses. He enjoys spending time with family, especially his five grandchildren, and revels in the tranquility of his home and the outdoors.

Leisfeld holds CTCA in high regard, expressing his gratitude for the compassionate and comprehensive care he received. He credits the center with providing him with a sense of belonging and hope throughout his cancer journey, treating him as an individual rather than merely a patient.
