Stephen Caldwell is a Scottish footballer who played as a defender. He was born on September 12, 1980, in the Scottish city of Stirling. At the age of 17, Stephen and his younger brother Gary went to England, where he started playing for the reserve team of Newcastle United. After a year, he was offered a professional contract with the Magpies, which he signed on August 1, 1998.
He made his debut for Newcastle United in an official match against Manchester City in September 2000. Caldwell scored his first goal in his second match for the club, a League Cup game against Bradford City in November 2000. During his career, he also played for other English clubs such as Blackpool, Bradford City, Leeds United, Sunderland, Burnley, Wigan Athletic, and Birmingham City. He also had a stint with Canadian club Toronto.
Caldwell's time at Newcastle United was followed by loan spells at Blackpool and Bradford City. He scored his first Premier League goal for Newcastle United against Middlesbrough on November 4, 2002. He then joined Leeds United on loan for the second half of the 2003/04 season, where he scored his second goal in English leagues against Blackburn Rovers.
In 2004, Caldwell's contract with Newcastle United expired, and he became a free agent. He signed with Sunderland on June 28, where he made his debut against Crewe Alexandra. In January 2007, Caldwell moved to Burnley and became the team's captain.
Caldwell played a significant role in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League in the 2008/09 season. He played 57 matches and scored two goals against Preston North End and Plymouth Argyle. However, his contract with Burnley expired in the following season, and he left the club as a free agent.
In June 2010, Caldwell had a trial with Bolton Wanderers, and he signed a one-year contract with Wigan Athletic on August 23. He reunited with his younger brother Gary, who was the captain of Wigan Athletic. Caldwell made his debut for Wigan against Hartlepool United in the League Cup. After his contract with Wigan expired, he joined Birmingham City on July 7, 2011.
Caldwell made his debut for Birmingham City against Derby County on August 6, 2011. He played for the Scottish national team, making his debut against Poland in a friendly match in April 2001. He has 12 appearances for Scotland, with no goals scored.
