Biography of Steven Stamkos

Steven Stamkos was born on February 7, 1990, in Markham, Canada. He grew up in Unionville, Canada, and played for the Markham Waxers club. Stamkos comes from a family with Scottish and Macedonian heritage. Before being drafted into the OHL, he attended Brother Andre Catholic High School in Markham.

Hockey Career

Stamkos was selected first overall in the 2006 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Draft from the Markham Waxers club. Following a successful career with the Sarnia Sting in the OHL, Stamkos was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the 2008 NHL Draft.

He signed his entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 29, 2008. Stamkos made his NHL debut in Prague during the 2008-2009 season. He earned his first point in his eighth game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, his hometown team. Stamkos scored his first goal in the following game against the Buffalo Sabres, beating Ryan Miller. In February 2009, he achieved his first career hat-trick in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Despite criticism for his performance in the first half of the season, where he was only given limited ice time, Stamkos finished the 2008-2009 campaign as a promising player with 19 points in the last 20 games. He continued to impress at the 2009 IIHF World Championship, forming a successful partnership with Martin St. Louis.

International Career

Stamkos represented Canada at the 2007 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where his team won the gold medal. After his rookie season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Stamkos was selected to participate in the 2009 IIHF World Championship, where Canada won the silver medal.

Sponsorship

In addition to his hockey career, Stamkos has several sponsors, including a sponsorship agreement with the well-known corporation, Nike. The details of this agreement are not disclosed. Stamkos appeared in an online video by Nike titled "Forget Everything", which coincided with his first game in his hometown on October 28, 2008. He is also sponsored by the Swiss watch company, Tissot.
