President of North Macedonia: Stevo Pendarovski

Early Life and Education

Stevo Pendarovski, a Macedonian politician and academic, was born on 3 April 1963. He obtained an LL.B. degree from Saints Cyril and Methodius University in 1987. Later, he pursued an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science at the same university.

Academic and Political Career

From 2008 onwards, Pendarovski served as an Associate Professor in International Security, Foreign Policy, and Globalization at the American College University in Skopje. In 1998-2001, he held positions in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and as an advisor to President Boris Trajkovski. He chaired the State Election Commission from 2004-2005 and was an advisor to President Branko Crvenkovski from 2005-2009.

Presidential Campaigns and Election

Pendarovski ran as a presidential candidate in 2014 for the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), finishing second. In 2019, he again contested the presidency, this time representing the SDSM and the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) coalition. He emerged victorious in the second round of the election, garnering over 51% of the vote.

Presidency

Upon taking office on 12 May 2019, Pendarovski became the first President of the newly-renamed Republic of North Macedonia. He implemented the country's first-ever state of emergency during the COVID-19 pandemic to curb the spread of the virus. In February 2022, Pendarovski showed solidarity with a young student with Down syndrome who faced bullying by escorting her to school.

Personal Life

Pendarovski is married to Elizabeta Gjorgjievska, a doctor and professor of dentistry at the University of Skopje. They have one child, Ognen.
