Steve Harris: The Founding Father of Iron Maiden

Early Life and Influences

Stephen Percival Harris was born on March 12, 1956, in London's East End. Raised as the eldest of four children, he grew up in a household largely populated by women. Music played a constant presence, with his sisters and their friends dancing to The Beatles and other popular bands.

Early Footballing Aspirations

Alongside music, Steve's passions included football, tennis, and cricket. As a youth, he harbored dreams of becoming a professional footballer for his beloved West Ham United. However, music ultimately took precedence.

Initial Musical Journey

Inspired by prog rock albums from Jethro Tull, King Crimson, and Genesis, Steve initially aspired to become a drummer. However, the limitations of his small apartment necessitated a switch to bass guitar. Despite his hopes of playing in a serious band, his efforts with "Influence" and "Gypsy's Kiss" proved unsuccessful.

Formation of Smiler

In 1974, Steve joined "Smiler," a band comprised of older musicians. His contributions were met with skepticism, and his original compositions, including "Burning Ambition," were rejected. The band's lackluster performances and musical direction led Steve to search for a new path.

The Birth of Iron Maiden

In 1975, Steve assembled a group of like-minded musicians, including Dave Sullivan, Ron "Rebel" Matthews, Paul Day, and Terry Rance. Officially founded in May 1976, the band adopted the name "Iron Maiden," inspired by the historical torture device and, later, the nickname given to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

International Success and Beyond

By 1981, Iron Maiden had achieved professional status, signing a record deal with EMI and touring extensively. Steve Harris's songwriting and leadership skills played a pivotal role in the band's global success and enduring legacy. Throughout his career, Harris has made significant contributions to the world of rock music, solidifying his place as a legend in the genre.
