Early Life and Family
Born in 1957 in the village of Sahnewal, Punjab, India, Dharmendra Singh Deol, affectionately known as "Sunny Deol," is the son of legendary actor Dharmendra. Dharmendra, a devout Sikh, belonged to the Arya Samaj reformist movement. Despite the religious prohibition against polygamy, Dharmendra's love for actress Hema Malini led him to obtain permission from Brahmins for a second marriage without dissolving his first.
Sunny has two brothers, Bobby and Rocky, both of whom also became renowned actors. Sunny's half-sisters, Esha and Ahana, were born from Dharmendra's second marriage to Hema Malini. The Deol family's involvement in the film industry shaped the careers of all three brothers.
Film Career
Debut and Initial SuccessSunny Deol's acting debut came in 1983's "Betaab," which launched his career and earned him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor. In 1984, he starred in the Soviet-Indian collaboration "Legend of Love," which gained recognition both in India and the Soviet Union.
Action Packed Roles
Deol's breakthrough role came in the 1985 action thriller "Arjun." He cemented his status as a leading action star with films like "Sultanat" (1986), "Ghayal" (1990), "Damini" (1993), and "Border" (1997). His performance as a boxer in "Ghayal" earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and a National Film Award Special Jury Award.
Directing and Collaborations
In 1999, Deol made his directorial debut with "Dillagi," starring himself, his brother Bobby, and Urmila Matondkar. He has since directed several films, including "Apne" (2007), which featured his father and brothers, and "Yamla Pagla Deewana" (2011), a comedy action film.
Romantic Comedy and Remake Controversy
Deol ventured into the romantic comedy genre with "I Love New Year" (2013), an unauthorized remake of the Russian film "Irony of Fate." However, the film failed to live up to expectations and drew criticism from the original filmmaker.
