Early Life and Education
Born on April 17, 1955, Professor Sergey Tigranovich Zolyan embarked on an academic journey that would shape his career and contributions to Armenian society. In 1977, he graduated with distinction from the Philological Faculty of Yerevan State University (YSU).
Academic Pursuits
After completing his undergraduate studies, Zolyan pursued an internship at the University of Tartu under the guidance of renowned scholar Yuri Lotman. In 1982, he successfully defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation, followed by his Doctor of Sciences dissertation in 1988.
Professorial Career
Since 1988, Zolyan has served as Professor at the Department of Russian Language at YSU. In 1997, he was appointed Rector of the Yerevan State University of Foreign Languages named after V. Ya. Bryusov, a position he held until his passing.
Scholarly Contributions
Throughout his career, Zolyan has authored numerous academic articles and monographs, many of which have gained international recognition. In 1990, he published a collection of Armenian spiritual poetry from the 5th to 15th centuries translated into Russian. His 1991 work, "Semantics and Structure of the Poetic Text," delved into literary analysis.
Regional Conflict Studies
In 2001, Zolyan published the highly regarded monograph "Nagorno-Karabakh: Problem and Conflict." Drawing on extensive empirical and archival evidence, he explored the methodological and practical challenges inherent in addressing regional conflicts.
Public Engagement
Beyond his academic pursuits, Zolyan actively engaged in public service. He served as a member of the Human Rights Commission under the President of Armenia, where he advocated for human rights and social justice.
