Early Career and Success

Bonaly made her debut at the European and World Championships in 1989. Her coaches immediately focused on incorporating difficult jumps into her routines, sacrificing the quality of her gliding and other elements. In her debut free program, she became the first woman in the world to execute two combinations of two triple jumps (Lutz-toe loop and two toe loops).

European Champion

From 1991 to 1995, Bonaly achieved an incredible five consecutive victories at the European Championships. However, she was unable to secure a single victory at the World Championships, where she faced tough competition from other European skaters. Despite this, judges recognized her for her difficult and risky elements, awarding her high scores for technical execution.

Controversial Moments

In the 1994 World Championships, Bonaly refused to step onto the podium after narrowly missing out on the gold medal. She disagreed with the results and only agreed to accept the medal after persuasion from the president of the International Skating Union. However, she later removed the medal in protest.

In 1996, Bonaly attempted a quadruple salchow and a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, both unsuccessfully. Her mother, Suzanne Bonaly, who served as her choreographer, brought in Russian specialist Natalia Volkova to focus on the artistic side of her performances. This shift in focus made it difficult for Bonaly to maintain her previous technical complexity.

Later Years and Olympic Controversy

In her later years as an amateur skater, Bonaly struggled with executing even the basic triple jumps. At the 1998 Olympics, realizing she had no chances of winning a medal, she included a banned backflip in her program. As a result, judges deducted an additional 0.2 points from both of her scores.

Despite her technical difficulties, Bonaly always captivated audiences with her charm and authenticity. Her daring and risky elements further endeared her to fans.
