Biography of Susan Kare

Susan Kare is an artist and graphic designer who is best known for creating many of the interface elements for the Apple Macintosh in the 1980s. She was born and raised in Pennsylvania, USA, and is the sister of both a filmmaker and a physicist.

Education and Early Career

Kare earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, from Mount Holyoke College in 1975. She then went on to receive her Doctor of Philosophy degree from New York University in 1978. After completing her education, Kare moved to San Francisco where she began working at an art museum.

Work at Apple

In the early 1980s, Kare was invited to join Apple by her high school friend Andy Hertzfeld. She worked at Apple for approximately four years and is most well-known for her creations during that time, including the Chicago and Geneva fonts, the iconic Happy Mac startup icon, the drawing of the Command key used on Apple keyboards, and the famous Clarus the Dogcow.

Independent Career

After leaving Apple, Kare joined NeXT, a computer company founded by Steve Jobs. She later became a successful independent graphic designer and worked with clients such as Microsoft and IBM. For Microsoft, she designed a deck of playing cards for the game Solitaire and contributed to the design elements of Windows 3.0. She also created icons and design elements for IBM's OS/2 Warp and Eazel's file manager Nautilus.
